Ideally, a thrust washer should be stationary with respect to and piloted by its supporting or backing member whether or not this is an integral part of the shaft or housing. There should be no rubbing action between the thrust washer and any other machine member. The economics of design, however, often preclude these ideal conditions and thrust washers must be employed in another manner.
